Monster

August 13, 2005

Once upon a time in a faraway land,
there was a monster without a name.
The monster wanted a name very, very badly.
So, the monster decided to go on a journey and look for a name.
But the world is large,
so the monster split in two and they went on the journey.
One headed east,
and the other headed west.

The monster who headed east found a village.
There was a smith at the entrance to the village.
"Oh, Mister Smith, please give me your name."
"There's no way I can give you my name."
"If you give me your name,
in return, I'll go inside you and make you stronger."
"Really?
If I can become stronger, then I'll give you my name."
The monster went inside the smith.
The monster became the smith, Otto.
Otto was the strongest man in the village.

However, one day...
"Look at me! Look at me!
The monster inside me has become this big!"
*munch munch*
*crush crush*
*snap snap*
*swallow*
The monster, who had become hungry,
ate Otto from the inside out.
The monster went back to being a monster without a name.
Even though he went inside the cobbler, Hans...
*munch munch*
*crush crush*
*snap snap*
*swallow*
He was again back to being a monster without a name.
Even though he went inside the hunter, Tomas...
*munch munch*
*crush crush*
*snap snap*
*swallow*
Once again, he was back to being a monster without a name.

The monster went inside a castle to find a wonderful name.
Inside the castle was a sick boy.
"If you give me your name, I'll make you stronger."
"If I can get well again and become strong, then I'll give you my name."
The monster went inside the boy.
The boy became very healthy.
The king was very glad.
"The prince has become well!
The prince has become well!"
The monster became fond of the boy's name.
He also became fond of life at the castle.
So, even though he became hungry, he held his hunger back.
Even though he was really hungry every single day, he held it in.
But he became so hungry that...
"Look at me! Look at me!
The monster inside me has become this big!"
The boy ate his servants and his father -- everyone.
*munch munch*
*crush crush*
*snap snap*
*swallow*

Since there was no one left,
the boy went on a journey.
He walked for many, many days.
One day, the boy
met the monster who had headed west.
"I have a name.
It's a wonderful name."
The monster who had headed west said,
"You don't need a name.
You can be happy without a name.
We are monsters without names, after all."
The boy ate the monster who had headed west.
Although he had finally found a name,
there was no one left who could call him by that name...

even though Johan was such a wonderful name.
